wood turning
Wood turning is an art, not dissimilar from painting or sculpture. The biggest difference between most art forms and turning wood bowls is that every piece of wood has its own story to tell, and finding and exposing the beauty of that story is what turning is all about. Like humans, every tree has had good years and bad, hard times and times of healing. And those seasons are what gives a tree, just like us, our character. The goal of a good wood turner is to find that character and bring it out, to expose it, for the world to enjoy.
I primarily turn wood bowls, platters and boxes; wooden salad bowls, decorative bowls, large and small bowls, as well as lidded boxes in a variety of sizes and shapes. Some wood species are great for utilitarian bowls and some are not. Some have spectacular grain and character and some do not. The pleasure in turning ugly chunks of wood into bowls is that no two are the same, and you're never positive what your going to get in the end. Once a bowl is finished and I know its grain structure, stability and durability I label them with the recommended use, long term care and if the bowl has been resin stabilized and what that means for the user.
In my time as a wood turner I have come to realize that the more damaged the tree, the more beautiful the bowls it will produce. However that leads to some problems for a turner, damaged wood bowls can be dangerous to work with and often will not survive the turning process. I have largely rectified that problem by taking advantage of 21st century technology, I use a number of resin and epoxy process that allow me to salvage the most rotten and damaged pieces of wood. Not just making the unusable into the usable, but showing the incredible beauty of what most turners would call trash. This process also allows me to turn what would normally be a decorative, fragile wood into a utilitarian, resilient wooden salad bowl by stabilizing and hardening it. The stabilizing process adds both beauty and toughness to the finished product.
